Job Description

This is a very exciting time at Staff of Life as we will be expanding our food service program. We’re looking for a talented chef who can help us achieve our vision of making Staff of Life a culinary destination. 

The Food Service Manager runs all aspects of the culinary department at Staff of Life and is capable of performing the duties assigned to all the department crew members.  The ideal candidate is experienced in all aspects of running a commercial kitchen. Familiarity with computers is necessary. The ability to speak and understand Spanish, knowledge of healthy cooking, specialty diets and organic standards are helpful, but not required. We offer a generous benefits package to our full time employees including dental, medical, 401k, and discounts on food. The right candidate will earn $20/hour or more.
Duties include but are not limited to:

1. Hiring, supervising, directing, and training new and current employees
2. Enforcing Staff of Life, state and local policies regarding food safety and employee conduct within the department and the use of recipes by deli workers.
3. Demonstrates experience and teaching ability in the use of knives and cooking tools and techniques.
4. Work as a part of a team as well as independently.
5. Give verbal and written directions and communicate with others in a professional manner.
6. Capable of lifting as much as 50 lbs from floor level in a safe manner.
7. Demonstrates ability for prioritizing.
8. Experience in determining if the food meets Staff of Life quality and taste standards.
9. Demonstrates the ability to direct the production of the required amounts of menu items in a timely manner.
10. Ensures all food is prepared to store expectations, and that recipes are followed.
11. Creating new menu items appropriate for Staff of Life including sandwiches, hot bar, deli case, prepack, and seasonal items. Adjusts recipes for optimum profitability including use of CHEF TECH software to cost all recipes.
12. Supervising catering orders to ensure proper follow through.
13. Places orders with providers of ingredients and supplies in the needed amounts making sure the department does not run out but without building unnecessary inventory.
14. Sourcing quality ingredients at the best prices possible to ensure profitability.
15. Available for 5 shifts a week plus availability on call to cover emergencies.
16. Demonstrates initiative by suggesting and helping others without being asked.
17. Responsible for supervising the performance of the Food Service team, performing regular evaluations, and disciplining with documented counseling's, suspensions, or termination as deemed necessary.

Staff of Life Natural Foods began as a whole grain bakery in 1969. Over the years we have developed many locally renowned breads and pastries. We have since grown to a full service natural foods market.

- Prepare or assist in the preparation of baked goods including muffins, pastries, cookies, cakes, and breads with a focus on whole grains, and gluten free options.
- Maintain proper sanitation procedures. Observe all health and safety rules. Maintain, operate and sanitize all baking machinery;
- Follow and comply with established procedures, including Weights and Measures, health and sanitation, and adhere to safe work practices.
- Give every customer immediate and undivided attention. Surprise and delight the customers with consistent, delicious baked goods.

- Knowledge of bakery procedures and policies.
- Comfort with whole grain, natural foods baking, gluten free baking, both pastries and bread preferred
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members.
- Able to prioritize efficiently.
- Available for flexible scheduling to meet the needs of the department.

- Stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Bend and stoop to grasp objects and climb ladders. Bend and twist neck and waist, reach above and below shoulders and squat.
- Bend and lift loads, not to exceed 50 pounds. Push and pull carts weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation.
- Environmental exposure to extreme temperatures (coolers, ovens, freezer, outdoors, etc.)

-4am - 12pm initially during training period
